Yoga is a meditation practice that has been around for many centuries. It has a number of positive effects on the body, mind and soul and has been known to be able to cure almost any ailment.

 

One of the many reasons that people practice yoga is for weight loss. Certain asanas can help tone your body and help you shed the excess fat and weight that you’ve been trying to. Yoga for weight loss works better as is it boosts the overall health of your body apart from helping you shed excess weight.

 

Here are some asanas that you can try, to lose weight:

 

The bow pose (Dhanurasana):

  • Lie down on the floor-on your stomach.
  • Slowly lift your legs and try to stretch and hold your legs with your hands.
  • Stay in this bow like posture for at least 30 seconds and then let go.

The bow pose improves your digestion and appetite. It can cure constipation and gastrointestinal problems as well. Apart from this, it flexes your back and improves overall flexibility.

 

The locust post (Shalbasana):

  • Lie down on your yoga mat- on your stomach.
  • Raise your left leg about 10 inches. Ensure that your leg is straight; don’t bend your knees.
  • Try doing the same with your right leg.
  • To end this asana, trying to raise both legs together and stay in that position for 30 seconds.
  • Make sure your hands are under your thighs.

This asana stimulates the abdominal organs and the (autonomic) nervous system.

 

The half spinal twist (Ardha Matsyendrasana):

  • Sit on your yoga mat with your legs spread out.
  • Bend your left foot at the knee and place it over the right leg.
  • Bend your right knee and fold that leg in, such that your right heel is under the left buttock.
  • With your right hand, hold your left toe.
  • Twist your trunk while inhaling, with your left arm encircling your back as you twist. The palm of the hand should be facing outwards.
  • Inhale and exhale slowly.

This asana stimulates the heart, liver, kidneys and lungs.

 

The cobra pose (Bhujangasana):

  • Start by lying face down on your mat.
  • Your hands should be placed on either side, palms flat.
  • Now, raise your head and look upwards while bringing your palms close to your shoulder, elbows erect.
  • Slowly shift the weight from your stomach to the hands, lifting your upper body.
  • Stretch your shoulders back so that your chest is thrust out.
  • Your hands are still bent at the elbows at this point. Straighten them out to stretch arms, making them perpendicular to the floor.
  • Relax your back and shift the weight onto your arms (which are straight).
  • Slowly go back to the previous position and follow the steps backwards to release this pose.

This asana improves blood circulation, cures indigestion, constipation and relieves stress.

These yoga poses are great to detox the body and help you lose weight. They stretch and work on the muscles that can accumulate fat such as the torso, abs, arms and thighs. Practicing these poses regularly will definitely help you lose weight. Time to say goodbye to those love handles, forever!

Giveaway – Chocolate fun for EVERYONE!

My son’s school is a “nut-free” zone due to the high number of kid’s with allergy issues to nuts.  This isn’t too tricky for lunches and snacks but come Halloween – it’s a nightmare!  (pun intended  ;))  And not just for the obvious nut allergy problem, but because we are a mostly gluten free family and we limit artificial colors and sugar.  My son has adapted but the gluten free, nut free options are usually very high in artificial colors and frequently straight sugar.  It’s no fun for many of the kids, even if they don’t have an allergy.

Peach Cobbler - Gluten FreeStill More Peaches –> Peach Cobbler

Yes, I’m still working through the excess of peaches but this cobbler actually came about because of my son eating a dessert at a restaurant.  About once a month we have a date night at the local country club where they entertain the kids with a movie and dinner while the adults have a nice meal alone.  It’s a real treat for my husband and I.  The meals for the kids are less than spectacular but truthfully, normal fare for what most kids are being fed in today’s society.  My son is always quick to tell me about the amount of carbs he ate in the form of GMO laden popcorn, sugar sweetened lemonade, and usually deep fried chicken strips.  I breathe deep and remind myself of the 80-20 rule and let it go.

Restaurant Dessert – UGH!

Sorry, I digress.  (obviously I’m not completely letting it go . . .)  Anyway, this last time our son joined us for dessert after the movie.  What started as a nice family moment ended up a nightmare as the sugar and gluten from the fruit cobbler took their toll on my son (combined with the rest of the junk foods) and he turned into a kid-from-hell.  Know that I don’t say that lightly but all of a sudden he was bouncing off the walls, couldn’t control the volume of his voice or really even his actions.  We had to remove ourselves.

This is was just another example of what these foods end up doing in our bodies.  As adults we don’t notice the effects as much and we have adapted to them.  For kids, it’s really noticeable!

So, I needed to find a way to make a cobbler that my son would enjoy without turning into a kidzilla.  Since I have lots of peaches, peach cobbler it was.

We really, really loved this recipe.  It’s sweet, but not over-the-top.  The combination of fats helped slow an insulin reaction.  Using Pamela’s baking mix made it gluten free.  Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Peach Cobbler Ingredients:

  • ½ cup coconut sugar
  • 1 Tbs. arrowroot
  • ¼ tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 4 cups chopped peaches (about 4-6 medium)
  • 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice
  • 3 Tbs. grass-fed pasture butter, softened
  • 1 cup Pamela’s gluten free baking mix
  • 1 Tbs. coconut sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking powder for alternative grains
  • ½ tsp. sea salt
  • ½ cup dairy alternative

Directions:

  1. Heat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Mix ½ cup coconut sugar, arrowroot, and cinnamon in 2 quart saucepan.  Stir in peaches and lemon juice.  Cook, stirring constantly until mixture boils.  Boil and stir for no more than 8 minutes while mixture thickens.  Pour into ungreased 2 quart casserole dish.
  3. Cut butter into baking mix.  Add 1 tablespoon coconut sugar, the baking powder and salt.  Mix until it looks like fine crumbs.  Stir in milk.  Drop dough by six spoonfuls onto hot mixture peach mixture.
  4. Bake until topping is golden brown, 25-30 minutes.  Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

Serves 6

Peach CrispToo Many Peaches – Hello, Peach Crisp

Just like I spent weeks trying to use up the extra zucchinis recently (and I still have a few more ideas to go), now I’m inundated with peaches.  I love these tender, sweet fruits that we only get for a couple months, but they’re hard to keep.  Last year my mother canned the extra peaches and it was sad this winter when we used the last jar – my son even shed a tear or two.  Sure, we’ve frozen them too, but there just isn’t anything as wonderful as fresh peaches.

Besides just eating the peaches fresh, we love them grilled because it caramelizes the sugar and makes them even sweeter.  But, my son wanted peach crisp.  He heard about this from a friend so I had to try and figure out how to make something similar at home.

We loved this recipe!

Peach Crisp Tricks

A couple items though – first, this makes a lot of topping.  I think we could have used about half this amount but my son felt it wasn’t as good with less.  Feel free to let me know your thoughts on how ooey-gooey it needs to be.  Second, if you’re going to make this gluten-free, make sure you purchase gluten-free oats.  Third, this recipe didn’t hold up very well overnight as the oats got kind of soggy so I would recommend making only what you need for the meal.  Finally, if you have the choice, I highly recommend the cling-free peaches so you aren’t battling the pit too much as this bakes up much prettier if you have nice slices of peach.

Peach Crisp Ingredients:

  • 4-6 medium peaches (about 4 cups)
  • 2/3 cup coconut sugar
  • ½ cup Pamela’s gluten free baking mix
  • ½ cup gluten-free whole oats
  • 1/3 cup grass-fed pasture butter, softened
  • ¾ tsp. ground cinnamon
  • ¾ tsp. ground nutmeg

Directions:

  1. Heat oven to 375 degrees.  Slice peaches and arrange in a greased 8×8 pan.
  2. Mix remaining ingredients.  Sprinkle over peaches.
  3. Bake, uncovered, until topping is golden brown and peaches are hot, about 30 minutes.

Serves 6

I’m trying to get to all the weight loss questions but I was a bit surprised by the response, although I appreciate it immensely.

FOODS TO AVOID QUESTION:

Is there anything that absolutely must be avoided–sugar, fat, salt–or everything is fine in moderation?

ANSWER:
I’m not sure I would say anything besides trans fats are foods to avoid, but certainly there are foods that should be decreased – sugar being the most important. Any decent weight loss programs should include sugar in the foods to avoid.  It’s a delicate balancing act for our body to monitor the amount of glucose in our bloodstream and release the proper hormones to keep our glucose levels “normal”. It is a fundamental part of our human makeup for the body to try and keep balance, including our blood sugar levels. If our sugar levels get too high or too low the body releases hormones to bring everything back into balance. The primary organs that make these course corrections are the pancreas, liver, and adrenal glands. Most people have heard of insulin by now. This is what the body uses when we have too much sugar in our system. The body starts converting the sugar and storing it in the liver, muscle fibers, and oh no . . . fat and cholesterol and then stores it. This is the very simple explanation as to why too much sugar will make you gain weight.

As a society we are inundating ourselves with sugar and refined carbohydrates. According to the USDA the U.S. sugar consumption in 1821 was 10 pounds per person, 110 pounds by the 1950’s, 126 pounds by the end of the ‘80s, 152 pounds by the beginning of the new century and estimates are at 199 pounds currently. A record high!
Let’s break that down. Each person in the United States is eating almost 200 pounds of sugar each year. That’s just sugar. This equals approximately 8.64 ounces per day or 245 grams per day per person. That’s over 58 teaspoons a day, or one box, like this every other day. The stress this puts on our pancreas, liver, and adrenal glands is profound, dangerous, and unhealthy.

Excess sugar is associated with obesity, type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, tooth decay, non-alcoholic fatty disease and a lot more chronic illnesses and aches and pains.

So, the weight loss tips solution is to start identifying the amount of sugars you are consuming. As always, this is easier said than done sometimes because manufacturers have created a lot of names for sugar. Often if you add up all the different types of sugars in one product, sugar is actually the number one ingredient. Now, not all sugar is bad. For some dominant glands, a little sweetener, like raw honey or a serving of fruit actually will help create balance, but overall everyone needs to pay attention to the amount of sugar foods you are eating. To help with that I’ve created a handout with the most current alternative names for sugar – they’re always changing, but this is a good starting point. Just click below to download a copy. Now, using your food journal start looking for hidden sugars and try to figure out how much you are consuming each day. Remember there is a big difference between added sugars versus natural sugars – putting a teaspoon of sugar in your coffee versus eating ½ cup of blueberries – but start looking at what you’re eating – it just might surprise you. No matter what the source of the sugar, less is better and even more so if it’s added sugar.

Now, I know that your question is going to be how much is okay. According to the American Heart Association the maximum amount of added sugar each day is 100 calories for women which is about 25 grams or 6 teaspoons.

To Lose Weight It’s More Than Calorie Calculation

Today’s question really needed it’s own space because thinking counting all your calories will help you lose weight is a big mistake.  Calorie calculation may work in the beginning if someone is sedentary or extremely overweight, but it won’t work in the long run and it doesn’t help people learn how to lose weight.  To really lose weight it’s important to pay attention to more than just the calorie calculation and here’s why.

First though, just a quick recap in case you are just joining me with this blog.

In the first blog I started answering weight loss questions and giving tips on how to lose weight because I was really close to wrapping up the long-awaited Eat Right for Life Plan.

Actual amount of calories need to consume to loses weight

Calorie Calculation ANSWER:
This probably seems like a simple question but it’s actually quite complicated. First, it depends on your current weight. You can decrease calories to lose weight, no doubt. Second, it depends on your activity level. You can increase your activity to lose weight. Third, it depends on the type of calories. Not all calories are created equal. There is a big difference between 100 calories of broccoli and a 100 calorie “snack pack”.

Using this example, broccoli is among the vegetables that contain the largest concentrations of sulfur compounds which increase the liver’s ability to produce enzymes that neutralize potentially toxic substances. Most snack packs contains hydrogenated oils that ARE toxic substances! Broccoli is rich in vitamins A & C as well as powerful phytonutrient antioxidants to protect us from damage caused by free radicals. Most snack packs contain partially hydrogenated oils that create free radicals.  Let’s not forget they also contain sugar, high fructose corn syrup, genetically engineered soybean oil, regular corn syrup and flavorings.

Each of these foods are just 100 calories but the bio-chemical reaction in your body certainly isn’t going to be the same for this same calorie count.

That 100 calorie snack pack is equivalent to about 1/8 of a cup or about two tablespoons. 100 calories of broccoli is equivalent to about 2 ¼ cups. With the real, whole food you have 2 ¼ cups of food to help fill you up instead of just two tablespoons of a food-type product – all for the same 100 calories.
I’ve never heard of anyone sitting down and eating an entire day’s worth of calories when it comes to real foods, but I’ve certainly heard it (too often) from people who sit down to the processed foods – it’s really easy to over consume then.

Weight loss just isn’t as simplistic as counting calories. Heck, if it was, every busy woman I know would be at her ideal weight and fitting into her favorite pair of skinny jeans. But it doesn’t work that way, too many busy women are is counting every calorie only to feel exhausted, overweight, and frustrated.

Rather than worry about counting calories I recommend learning your best foods and focusing on consuming them. When we eat real food that is in harmony with our body we don’t have to worry about the calories.
